Charity Wedding Favours… The history behind giving wedding favours.
Wedding favours are small gifts that you give to your guests. This tradition dates back to the 16th century, when it was common for upper class weddings in France and England. The original wedding favours consisted of five sugared almonds, which were given to each guest as a sign of good fortune. They represented fertility, longevity and wealth. Couples can choose from homemade jams, mini bottles of spirit, personalised gifts, and even charitable donations. You can donate to a cause you care about instead of giving out favours. Include the details on each place setting.
Who selects charity wedding favours?
This is a trend that’s growing in popularity and ticks many boxes for the modern bride and groom.
What’s available and why would you want to consider it for your wedding? Couples choose charity wedding favours for many reasons. They can select from a variety of options, such as sweet and quirky place cards, dignified badges, and even seed packets.
Here are some more benevolent suggestions…
Cancer Charity Wedding Favours.
Gift your guests with a pin badge to support a cancer charity of your choice. The pin badges are available in different designs, such as doves and bees. You can also use the back cards to write the names of your guests. The charities also sell colourful, biodegradable celebration confetti that is embedded with seeds. If you scatter it in a place that wildflowers will grow, the celebrations can continue year after year. As an example, Cancer Research UK has a variety of pin badges that include angels, flowers, and rainbows. There are also dinosaurs, footballs, and unicorns. Other cancer charities where you can source charity wedding favours are… Macmillan Cancer Support, Breast Cancer Now, Marie Curie and many others.
Honouring and remembering those who have passed.
Many couples will not be able to celebrate their wedding without a reference to loved relatives or friends that are no longer with us. This is especially true for diseases such as cancer, which still need research. Macmillan offers a wide range of wedding favours. From pins to place cards, to sticky notes and bunting, you can include the loved ones in your celebration.
The NSPCC has a wide range of toys, books and homeware that you can purchase to give to your young guests at the wedding. The NSPCC shop has a large selection of toys priced under £5, such as wooden yoyos, notebooks in bright colours and mini paint sets. These can be used as favours as well as entertainment on the day.
RNLI charity wedding favours.
Ideal for a coastal-themed wedding such as we have here in Dorset, the RNLI can supply chocolate pebbles or tins of fruit drops. The milk chocolate pebbles from the RNLI will look beach-brilliant scattered across your wedding tables. It’s advisable to let people know they’re edible or just picture their shock when those in the know bite into them! Alternatively, add a bag to each place setting and let your guests enjoy them into the evening and beyond as a super-sweet memento from your day.
Inspiration.
Weddings are more than just a fancy-dress day. A wedding is a celebration, an occasion to commemorate, and a time for commitment. All these elements lead us into reflection on our relationships, where we are in the world, and what we enjoy about our lives. By choosing charity wedding favours, the couple can demonstrate their values and aspirations for the future. The mental health charity Mind also has a wide range of wedding favours, including sunflower seed packets that fund the charity’s work and educate people about the organisation’s goal to make sure no one faces a mental illness alone.
